Leadership. Everyone has it. Every organization needs it. Many claim to be really good at it. Few have defined it. Fewer still have experienced exceptional levels of it. Why?

Leadership is a journey. It is about integrity, self-responsibility, energy and inspiration. It is also about waking up to ourselves and the world around us. Realizing that in whatever capacity we exert influence, we can make a difference. We have choices. We can ignore the subtle energies which urge us to accept our own culpability or we can choose to search in our hearts for the courage to make a stand, and shape our future for the better.

All of us, every single one of us can bring forward everything that is glorious and most powerful in ourselves and offer this as our leadership contribution. We can commit to finding our purpose, to be the best we can be, to strive for continued learning and growth. To know that we can choose to walk into the storm and trust we don’t need to look over our shoulder to know that others are following.

Leaders need to be agile. Our global economy demands new personal capacities as well as leadership capabilities. Change may begin in the mind but it takes place in the muscle. The traditional approach to leadership development was to move from the outside in; to identify the leader’s challenges and determine the competencies required to meet these challenges effectively. The introduction of emotional intelligence promoted an inside out approach focusing on the personal capacities needed for effective leadership.
